What is Teams Phone Standard?

Workspace with Microsoft Teams on screen and a Yealink Teams phone
The short answer

The licence that turns Teams into a phone system.

With Teams Phone Standard, an employee gets their own phone number in Teams and can call landline and mobile numbers. On a laptop, a mobile or a desk phone.

It’s the licence for the phone system in the cloud. The connection to the phone network is arranged separately.

What you get

Everything a phone system does, in Teams.

  • Your own numberMake and receive calls on your landline number, on any device.
  • Transfer and parkTake over, transfer or hold calls.
  • VoicemailListen to messages in Teams, also on the go.
  • Auto attendants and queuesA reception or service number with a menu and queue.
  • Calling on behalf of othersAn assistant answers calls for a manager.
  • Shared numbersColleagues call from one general number, without a number per person.
Which base do you need?

Teams Phone sits on top of a plan.

Teams Phone Standard is an add-on. You need a base licence underneath, such as Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Standard or Premium, E3, F1 or F3, or Microsoft Teams Enterprise. There’s a separate frontline version for frontline workers.

Microsoft 365 E5

Already included

E5 already includes Teams Phone, so you don’t buy it separately. Check this before ordering anything extra.

An AI receptionist on the phone.

Since late September 2026, Teams Phone Agent is generally available: an AI agent that answers the phone, handles questions and transfers calls. You pay per use with Copilot Credits, on top of Teams Phone.

Useful for a reception or service number, as long as you agree up front what the agent may do and when a person takes over.

We’ll put your licences side by side.

In the Cost check we look at which licences you have, what you use and where you pay twice. Independent: the report also includes options that don’t go through Cloud Avenue.
